Strengthening the impact of mentoring in Europe: A transnational study for youth professionals

European projects 21 August 2024

A new transnational study, carried out by five European partners as part of the MENTOR project, provides new insights into the needs and expectations of mentors and mentees in the youth sector in Europe. Aimed at youth professionals, the study offers practical tools for optimising mentoring in various contexts of international mobility.

Key actors at the heart of innovation

Youth professionals are key actors in the successful integration of young people into society and the world of work. Their role goes beyond simple project management: they are catalysts for change and promoters of mentoring, capable of profoundly influencing the future of young people through international mobility programmes. Their expertise, combined with their day-to-day commitment, makes them ideally placed to transform mentoring practices and maximise their impact.

The 5C approach: A framework for effective mentoring

At the heart of this study, the ‘5Cs’ – Competence, Confidence, Character, Connection and Care – are shown to be fundamental pillars of a successful mentoring relationship. Drawing on theories of social learning and youth development, the study highlights how these five dimensions can be integrated into the practices of professionals to improve the mobility experience of young people.

Adopting best practice for optimised mentoring

The central aim of the study is to provide youth professionals with practical tools for assessing and responding to the specific needs of mentors and mentees in a context of international mobility. These tools are designed to be easily integrated into day-to-day practice, encouraging the gradual spread of best practice within organisations. By drawing on these recommendations, professionals can not only improve their own practices, but also inspire and guide their colleagues in implementing more effective and impactful mentoring systems.

This study does more than simply map out needs and expectations: it proposes a genuine roadmap for enhancing the effectiveness of mentoring programmes across Europe, maximising the impact on young people and supporting the professionals who work with them.
