Caring Compass: putting theory into practice in social support

Caring CompassEuropean Projects14 January 2026

Supporting people in vulnerable situations cannot be done on the spur of the moment. Whether one works in the social, educational or professional sector, good intentions alone are not always enough when faced with the complexity of people’s life stories and their need for both emotional and practical support.

Developing the skills of those who support others

To address this challenge, the European Caring Compass project provides a comprehensive learning programme and methodological training materials (Training Curriculum and Methodological Training Material). The aim is to offer practical, structured and directly applicable tools to empower professionals and volunteers in the social sector.

A training programme rooted in real-world practice

Rather than purely theoretical teaching, this resource offers a training programme structured around key thematic modules designed to address concrete, everyday situations:

  • Gaining a better understanding of the role of a support worker: clarifying the supportive approach, setting healthy boundaries and building a relationship of trust.
  • Mastering the keys to communication: developing active and empathetic listening, adapting one’s communication style to suit different audiences, and defusing delicate situations.
  • Supporting the journey towards independence: assessing needs, helping to set realistic goals, and jointly developing a personalised action plan.
  • Managing stress and maintaining your own well-being: identifying the signs of compassion fatigue or burnout, and implementing emotional regulation strategies.
  • Thriving in a diverse environment: taking into account intercultural realities and neurodiversity, and ensuring inclusive and ethical support.

Active methods for practising and making progress

The true strength of this tool lies in its methodological and participatory approach. The training materials provide trainers, team leaders and facilitators with a wide range of ready-to-use activities: role-plays, real-life case studies, group reflection workshops and scenario-based exercises.

This approach enables participants to test their instincts, debrief with peers in a safe environment and firmly embed good interpersonal practices before applying them in real-life situations.

A collective tool to enhance your practices

Whether you are a counselling professional, a mentor, a social worker or a volunteer involved in a charity, this learning resource is a valuable toolkit for developing your approach to support. It provides a common foundation for harmonising support practices within an organisation and restoring meaning to day-to-day tasks.

By strengthening the training and skills of those who provide support, Caring Compass helps to create a more humane, fairer and more effective support system.

A resource to explore and make your own
