In today's digital age, our reliance on technology has been growing with devices and online services becoming integral parts of our daily lives. However, this convenience comes with a significant environmental cost that is often overlooked. From the production of digital devices to their daily usage and disposal, the environmental footprint of the digital sector is substantial. Understanding and tackling this issue is therefore essential to change the tide and effectively reduce the environmental impact of digital technology.

Understanding the environmental impact of digital technology

Digital technology, while indispensable, carries a heavy environmental burden. The production of digital devices involves intensive mining and the use of non-renewable resources, leading to deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. For example, manufacturing smartphones requires precious metals like gold, which, when mined, cause significant ecological disruption.

Once produced, the daily usage of digital devices further contributes to environmental degradation. Video streaming alone accounts for 80% of global web data usage. This constant data flow requires vast amounts of energy to power data centres, which operate 24/7 and generate significant heat, necessitating energy-intensive cooling systems. Simple habits like reducing video resolution and using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data can help mitigate these impacts.

Recycling and responsibly disposing of digital devices is also crucial due to the significant environmental and health impacts of e-waste. Improper disposal can release over 1,000 toxic substances, including harmful neurotoxins like lead, into the environment, posing severe risks to both ecosystems and human health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women. By responsibly managing e-waste, we can significantly reduce pollution and promote a more sustainable and healthy future.

By comprehending how digital technology contributes to resource depletion, energy consumption, and e-waste, degrading the environment worldwide, it seems clear that actions on multiple levels have to be taken. As an individual, you can adopt eco-friendly practices and raise awareness around you to encourage digital sustainability. This knowledge empowers us to play a proactive role in mitigating environmental damage and fostering a greener digital future.

The importance of eco-responsible digital habits

On a daily basis there are multiple actions that you can adopt to reduce drastically your digital impact on the environment. When using a digital device, simple habits such as lowering video streaming resolution, turning off auto-play features, and avoid sending unnecessary emails prove to be quite efficient.

On a similar note, it is also critical to adopt habits that aim at reducing the impact of production and disposal of digital devices. That can be done simply by adopting gestures that enable your digital devices to have a longer lifespan and prevent you from having to buy new products often. Habits like prevent overheating, cleaning screens and vents often and guaranteeing battery life are essential to keep your devices running for as long as possible.

These practices can rapidly and significantly reduce your digital carbon footprint when using your digital devices. Of course, depending on your professional activity or personal use, some may be harder to adopt than others. The eGreen project suggests that you adopt good practices depending on your situation and that you adapt gradually to new ones that may feel harder for you.
